In Business Central 2025 wave 1 (BC26), Microsoft released the Preview PDF attachments directly in web client feature. This feature lets you open PDF attachments directly in the Business Central web client without downloading them.
When working with sales orders, purchase invoices, or any record containing PDF attachments, users can now open and review them in a built-in document viewer. It’s fast, efficient, and adds to the paperless, cloud-native experience Business Central aims to deliver.
Files are shown in preview mode in a specialized viewer experience, like the print preview feature, and you can always download a PDF file from there.
📌 However, there’s a limitation.
This preview feature only supports PDF files. Formats such as Microsoft Word (.docx) or Excel (.xlsx) are currently not supported for in-browser preview. These still require downloading to view or edit.
Preview Word (.docx) Files in Business Central
While Microsoft’s native PDF preview in BC26 is a step forward, it leaves behind other commonly used document formats like Word (.docx)—a format essential for proposals, contracts, and internal documentation.
So, let’s develop the feature to preview Word (.docx) file as well in Business Central.
Output:
This solution helps users save time, avoid unnecessary downloads, and keep everything centralized within the Business Central workspace.
